Junior / Mini Rugby

Here at the quins aswell as having a youth team (Click here for the youth team website) we have several junior / mini rugby teams. Here is some information about them:

Pembroke Dock Quins under 10s

Sunday saw the Quins travel to Pembroke for a double header with the old enemy and a touring team from Tondu.
First up the hosts played Tondu and were humbled with a ten try thrashing by a very useful looking Tondu side which were both pacey and able to move the ball.

Quins then took on Pembroke with guests from the under 9s in the shape of Hywel Baker and Olie Lewis.
Playing down the slope in the first half the boys put a lot of pressure on Pembroke with some great driving play.
The Quins opened the scoring with a long range effort from Ben Hathaway who after breaking a few tackles showed good pace to score the first try.
The second try soon followed after some good tight work from Ewen Owens, Hywel Baker and Olie Lewis the Quins put the ball wide for Ben to claim his second try.
After the oranges Pembroke put some pressure on the Quins line and efforts were rewarded with a try after some sympathetic refereeing.
This spurred the Quins back into action and from the restart Olie Lewis took the ball up for the forwards to drive on with Hywel and Ewen setting a good platform for Nathan John to get the killer blow.

Quins – 3   Pembroke – 1

Team – Rhys Bradney, George Bellmaine, Ewen Owens, Zac Miles, Jacob Claypole, Nathan John, Liam Scourfield, Ben Hathaway, Charlie Dearden, Ewen Rees, Olie Lewis and Hywel Baker.

Seren y Gem – Ewen Owens – excellent tight work and defense.

The Quins had to reshuffle before the second game as several players had other commitments.
After only a short spell we were against a sprightly Tondu side which looked to run the ball from everywhere and it was a massive effort from the Quins to restrict them to only one try in the first half.
The tight work and tackling from the whole team was a credit to the boys.
The second half saw the Quins playing up the slope and with exploits of the first game and the first half, Tondu starting to find the gaps in the Quins Defence.
But the boys new found never say die attitude say the Quins fight back with two tries from Nathan John and Ewen Owens.

Quins – 2   Tondu – 5

Team – Rhys bradney, George Bellmaine, Ewen Owens, Zac Miles, Jacob Claypole, Nathan John, Liam Scourfield, Ewen Rees and Olie Lewis.

Seren y Gem – Olie Lewis – Total commitment all day.

Thanks to Hywel Baker and Olie Lewis who stepped in to help out.

The 10s have shown a steady improvement throughout the season and should be extremely pleased with the progress made.
Team Ella    6     Pembroke    4
Two very evenly matched teams both in age and ability. Both teams scored some really nice tries but we just edged the result. Our official scorer Lucy Owens have our try scorers as follows :- Jay Owens 2, Daniel Hearn 2, Chris. Thomas 1 and Dylan Scott 1. It was very satisfying to win the game without the services of Gethin Bradney who played for the A team. Daniel Hearne played his best game for us, Dylan Scott scored his first try, which was a just reward for all my bullying over the last few weeks. Chris Thomas scored a good try and with his size should be a force to be reckoned with next season. MAN OF THE MATCH for this game because he scored 2 tries and looked as though he would score every time he had the ball -  JAY OWENS

Team Ella    2     Tenby          6

We have met Tenby on a couple of occasions this season and unfortunately they are a little older than us but also very skilfull. Yet again we were able to score 2 nice tries against them through Jay Owens and Gareth Finnegan but we could not prevent them scoring 5 against us. Wait until next year we’ll show them!  MAN OF THE MATCH for this match -  GARETH FINNEGAN.

Very many thanks to Kevin Brown who kindly ran with the team today and did it very well. I’m sure he will be only too delighted to do this again.

Team Jack    4     Pembroke   4

Unfortunately I do not have a report for this game but I do have the try scorers. Jack Brown 2, Ben Gibby 1 and Jonathan Osbourne 1

Team Jack    4     Tenby         5

This was very nearly the U8’s upset of the season. Tenby are unbeaten this season. They are next week’s U8’s Finalists and only two weeks ago inflicted the heaviest defeat of the season on us. Yesterday was very different. All the boys played out of their skins and Tenby were extremely lucky to escape their first defeat of the season. The team did everything at pace, support was always available to the ball carrier and we witnessed some outstanding tries. With a team performance like this it would be very unfair to pick an individual as man of the match so MAN OF THE MATCH this weekend   THE WHOLE TEAM.

Before the 2 matches both teams met Tal Selley, who was home for the weekend. He obviously inspired the two teams to play as well as they did. Let us hope that one or two of these young players follow in his footsteps and achieve what he has achieved in  Welsh rugby. We wish him all the best in the forthcoming World 7’s Series.

The U8’s wish Jeff, Mark and the U14’s the best of luck in the Cup Final next Sunday. Our money is on you boys !

Quins u14s 19 Narberth 14

The Quins boys started extremely well and dominated most facets of play in the first 20 minutes. Both sides were perhaps over eager in this period and conceded several penalties of which Narberth were the more guilty as they were desperate to escape the pressure that the Quins boys were exerting upon them. The Quins boys really needed some reward from this pressure but poor decision making was the deciding factor here. They really should have made far more of the numerous penalties they had while camped in Narberth’s half. Narberth’s 1st score (a converted try) was against the run of play and really lifted the Narberth boys who went on to score again 10 minutes later to make the half time score 14 nil to Narberth and the Quins boys had nothing to show for their effort or dominance.

Action

At half time the Quins boys were a little deflated but the coaches new that they are not a side to give up the fight. It was in the second half that the game really came alive and the heart and desire of the Quins boys really started to influence the outcome. The decision making too was absolutely spot on in this half with Yog really on song with his tactical kicking he clearly now had his head up looking to see what was on. The Quins boys were awarded a penalty on Narberth’s 10m line this time Yog took the tap penalty the boys reacted and worked their way to Narberth’s 5m line where Giant prop Big k picked up and drove over for the Quins 1st score. This lifted the boys further and 10 minutes later they again battered their way to Narberth’s 5m line where u13s open side flanker Alex picked up and drove over for a deserved try which Craig converted to make the score now 14 – 12 in Narberth’s favour. A time check was made with the ref there was 5 minutes of full time and 3 minutes of injury time remaining. The Quins boys now really started to step up the intensity and all the fitness and hard work paid off in this last 8 minutes. Narberth were a beaten side at this point but the Quins boys had victory in their minds and never let up. Possession changed hands on several occasions at this point, Narberth tried to run out of trouble through their backs but flying winger Josh Noot broke their hearts with an interception between Narberth’s 13 -15 to race to the line and hammered home a fantastic Quins victory, Craig converted. Narberth tried to come back in the remaining 3-4 minutes but were thwarted by the magnificent Quins defence.

  12. Jack Brown – Stepped up today and showed his potential as quality Quins player.
  13. Josh Brown – Like his brother, never gave up and played with passion.

Geraint Powell – Away on Holiday and badly missed today.

The young Quins travelled the mighty Cleddau to play in the Annual Neyland Rugby Tournament.
With the weather on our side the team and band of merry supporters set up camp on the Neyland front pitch.
We had been drawn in Pool B: which looked to be the strongest group of sides:

  1. Haverfordwest
  2. Pembroke Dock Quins
  3. Fishguard
  4. Cardigan
  5. Whitland
  6. Narberth

Game 1. (Win)
The 1st game of the day was the Quins V Haverfordwest which was a well fought battle and a good eye opener for the Quins who had to battle hard to stay in front finally winning 1 – 0.
Game 2. (Win)
After a long wait the next game was Quins V Narberth which saw a better performance by the youngsters scoring 2 excellent try’s to make it 2 – 0 to the Quins.
Game 3.(Draw)
This was again a tough game against a busy Fishguard side that spoiled and slowed up many of the Quins attacks with the final whistle going at a draw 1 -1.

Game 4.(Win)
The Quins faced a big and mobile Cardigan side who pressed the Quins hard during the 1st few minutes, before the Quins power showed through and a comfortable win for the Quins 2 – 0.
Game 5.(Win)
With young Andrew Skone out of action with a badly hurt hand, the young Quins had to raise their game and make sure of a win to make it through to the Semi Finals.
Whitland where their next opponents and a side that looked big fast and dangerous, the Quins knuckled down and to the game to them and tackled everything that moved. The Quins ran in 3 cracking tries with no response from Whitland despite their very vocal crowd of supporters.
3 – 0 to the Quins.

SEMI FINAL: (Quins 0 V Morriston 1)
The Quins where through to the Semi final as winners of Pool B and faced a very big and organized Morriston side.
This game was a cracker with both sides playing their hearts out with some excellent rugby from all players. The final whistle blew with a draw of 1 try each. After a little rest we where informed that we would have to play 2 x 4 minute ½’s with sudden death on the 1st to score the Golden Try.
The Young Quins really raised their game and battled hard and where very unlucky not to score with the game being stopped for various injuries it was hard to get some rhythm going. Hywel Baker powered over into the corner only to score and then be told that it was no try because the 3 players he had  just broke through where lying injured on the floor! The Quins pressed hard and put their bodies on the line with outstanding work from all the players. This game was full of energy and both sides threw everything into it. With the 1st 4 minutes up at 0-0, the teams changed round and played the next 4 minute ½. Morriston played a good move by restarting with a cracking kick that rolled into the Quins try line, which looked very dangerous for the Quins who battled extremely hard to power drive and maul the ball out of the danger zone. The Quins attacked again a looked to have a 3 man overlap only to be pulled up again as 2 more Morriston player lay injured on the floor. This was frustrating for the Quins as they could again see the try line begging. Morriston put in one final attack and a lucky break out wide saw a rare space and a clean run through to score leaving the whole Quins team and supports totally deflated and disappointed.
This game was probably the best game of the tournament, with some outstanding Rugby from
2 top quality sides. (“Worthy of any final”)
Morriston went through to the final to face Neyland but where well beaten by a busy Neyland side, but it must be said that the Morriston Team where totally exhausted after playing nearly 16 minutes of hard battled Rugby against the Mighty Young Quins who took the sting out of their tales.
The Coaches would like to thank all the players for their total commitment, sportsmanship and dedication today, with so many outstanding performances they all must be very proud of themselves for what they have achieved.” A BIG well done to them all!”

Huw Baker!

UNDER 14’S
Pembrokeshire District CUP – SEMI FINALS
Pembroke Dock Harlequins 51 V Milford Haven 0 - AWAY

The Quins boys travelled to Milford for this semi final with a couple of key players missing due to various reasons. They were without influential Captain Doylie and dependable full back Damo.  Further minor injuries to prop Big K and back rower Sean John meant that the starting line up contained several U13 players who all performed extremely well against the older boys. The 1st score came after just 2 minutes from the ever present prop Bossie who managed to come off the blind side of a well driven line out to dash 30m to the try line untouched. The 1st half saw 3 further tries from fly half Craig Lucas, who never missed a tackle all game and fully deserved his score, no 8 Dan Lee scored 2 tries in this period with some strong running in broken play. The half time score was 22-0. In the second half the Quins boys really took the game by the scruff of the neck and battered themselves to within 6-7m of Milford’s try line for hard scrummaging u13s prop Hearney to bash over for a well taken prop’s try in just the 2nd minute of this half. Shortly after another u13s player George Kenniford also got on the score sheet with a well taken try. No 8 Dan Lee was next over the try line for his hat trick. With 5 minutes to go Ross Lasceles went on a powerful run from 35m out for a well taken try. Substitute Big k scored the final try with a pick and drive from a ruck close to Milford’s line.

MOM – Some fine performances today, particularly from – Yog, Craig, Bossie, Ryan, Jack, Jake, Nooty and Dan. There was however one player that stood out, who today was immense! From the U13s, Alex Washborne.

Well done to the whole squad!

We can now look forward to our trip to Narberth on finals day where we meet our old adversaries Narberth, who struggled to overcome Aberystwyth in their semi final – after eventually winning 23-21!

Training for the final will commence on Wednesday, 23rd May 6.30pm sharp!
